General Questions
What is the Aplio/Phone?
The Aplio/Phone is a small electronic device that allows you to make
a phone call without paying long-distance charges. The Aplio/Phone plugs into a standard
telephone and into your wall jack. It automatically switches your calls from your
long-distance carrier to the Internet. Both parties to the call need to have a way to talk
via the Internet; either an Aplio/Phone or a personal computer with Internet telephony
software.
What is the benefit of the Aplio/Phone?
There are two major benefits. First, your long-distance bills can be
cut dramatically. Second, since you're not paying by the minute, you can talk as long as
you want.
How much money can I save?
Your savings will depend on your calling habits. The Aplio/Phone is
suited to people who make many calls to a few locations. For example, if you make frequent
long-distance calls to family, friends or a branch office, you could see significant
savings with the Aplio/Phone.

Is it a speaker phone? Do I need to talk
through a microphone?
The Aplio/Phone has built-in speaker-phone, but you don't need to
use it. You normally will talk using your regular telephone handset. The speaker-phone can
be used for both Internet calls and regular telephone calls.
How do I install the
Aplio/Phone?
You attach Aplio/Phone to your telephone just like an answering
machine. No computer is required.
Using your telephone keypad, you program the Aplio/Phone with the
information it needs to connect to your Internet Service Provider. You need to program it
only once, or whenever your Internet account information changes.
Will it work if my phone uses
"pulse" dialing instead of touch-tones?
Yes. The Aplio/Phone can be configured to use either tone or pulse
dialing. Tone dialing is the default and pulse dialing is supported by setting an option
in the configuration menu.
Do I need an Aplio/Phone
at each end?
No. With Aplio/Phone 2.0, you can connect with Aplio/Phone users as
well as people using Internet telephony software on their personal computers.
Aplio/Phone 2.0 is compliant with the H.323 Internet telephony
protocol.
How do I make a call to
another Aplio/Phone?
If you're calling someone with an Aplio/Phone, you
dial the telephone as you would normally. Once you've established the
call, you simply press the 'Aplio' button and hang up the phones on
each end. Aplio/Phone will disconnect the long distance call, dial into
the Internet, reconnect to your calling party and ring both telephones.
The connection usually takes 45 seconds or less. Then you both pick
up the phone and continue your conversation.
How do I talk
to someone using an Aplio/PRO?
-
To call an Aplio/PRO, call the Aplio ID of the Aplio/PRO
using 100% Free Mode.
- To be called by an Aplio/PRO: your correspondents will call your
Aplio ID. You may be either connected in 100% Free Mode or using the
Wake-Up Call feature. For more information, see Aplio/PRO
Quick Start Guide.
Do I pay long distance
charges for the 45 second delay?
No. When you press the Aplio button and hang up the phone, the
Aplio/Phone disconnects the long distance call and dials your local Internet provider.
Is the initial long
distance call always necessary?
No. If you schedule your calls ahead of time, you can use
Aplio/Phone's 100% Free Mode. The receiving party must set their Aplio/Phone to 100% Free
Mode at the specified time and the calling party must place the call using the receiving
party's Aplio ID. The call will then be placed directly over the Internet without the
first long-distance call.
How do I connect to someone using Internet
telephony software on a PC?
For PC-to-Aplio calls, the Aplio/Phone is placed in 100% Free Mode.
The PC user then calls the Aplio/Phone using it's unique Aplio ID. See PC to Aplio/Phone Calls for more information.
Is Aplio/Phone compatible
with my Macintosh, PC, Windows95, Windows NT, etc?
Aplio/Phone does not require a computer at all. It
is fully self-contained and all its hardware is dedicated solely to your telephone calls.
When you buy an Aplio/Phone, everything you need for Internet Telephony is right in the
box.
Do I have to switch long
distance carriers?
No. You don't have to change a thing. Aplio/Phone will work with any
long distance carrier. You don't have to subscribe to a particular carrier or Internet
Telephony gateway service.
Will Aplio/Phone work with my
Internet Service Provider?
Yes! The Aplio/Phone will work with any standard dial-up ISP that
provides a true TCP/IP connection to the Internet.
Please note that some online providers may not be providing a true
TCP/IP connection. Online services such as AOL may use their own private networks and
provide gateways into the Internet. Contact your provider if you're not sure.
Also, the current version of Aplio/Phone supports dial-up analog
connections only and does not support digital connections through a LAN or T-1 line, for
example.
Will Aplio/Phone work in
my country?
Yes. Aplio/Phone is now in use in over 50 countries around the
world. Aplio/Phone places calls through the Internet and does not depend on technologies
specific to any country or region. If you can connect to the Internet through a dial-up
ISP, you can use the Aplio/Phone.
With the overall price
reduction on long-distance calls, is it still viable to buy Aplio/Phone?
Sure. Long-distance carriers aren't crazy. They are making
aggressive offers and promotions but they can't cut their prices by 90%! They will always
charge more than the local calls. Therefore, Aplio/Phone will be always cheaper.
What is the Aplio/Phone
opportunity?
IDC estimates that 24% of all Internet users are willing to use the
Internet as their long distance carrier. In addition, Killen and Associates predicts that
the Internet Telephony market will reach $63 billion dollars as early as 2001. Since
Aplio/Phone is the only easy, stand-alone solution, it has the largest opportunity of all
current Internet Telephony technologies.
What is the future of
Aplio/Phone?
Aplio/Phone is just the first product of a new generation of Smart
Internet Appliances made by Aplio. Watch out for more and new exciting devices providing
Internet services in a simple box and at extremely low cost!
Does it work through a PBX?
Yes, as long as it is an analog line. A good rule of thumb is this:
if you can use your fax machine or modem on the line, then the Aplio/Phone should work.
You cant use the Aplio/Phone on a digital line such as ISDN, T1, DSL, etc.
