Frequently Asked Questions

Quality and security

I heard that Internet telephony has bad sound quality. True?
In the early days of the technology (two-three years ago) the sound quality was inferior to standard telephones, especially with the first half-duplex PC-based software. With the full-duplex Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone, the most recent algorithms and state-of-the-art compression technologies have been implemented to ensure the best sound quality possible.
Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone 2.0 include our new PacketPlus™ technology. PacketPlus constantly monitors Internet traffic and adjusts the size and number of data packets transmitted across the wire. It gives the user an experience that is very near to true telephone sound quality.
In addition, Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone technology is dedicated to only one function: Internet Telephony. We don’t have any additional disk or CPU overhead like a computer does. The result is a crisper, clearer voice quality, comparable to, or better than, digital cellular phones.
What is the quality of the Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone?
The quality is very good, similar to a digital cellular call or an overseas phone call. The quality is significantly better than PC-based Internet telephony software. Due to the nature of the Internet, there is a slight delay between when you talk and the other party hears you. But the delay with the Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone is substantially less than other Internet telephony products. There is no static or other noise on the line. It is full-duplex, which means you can both talk at the same time.
Please note that when using an Aplio/PRO or an Aplio/Phone to talk with someone using PC-based telephony software, the sound quality may be limited by the PC software.
How long is the delay between when I talk and the other person hears me?
The delay is about half a second. This is a very small delay for this class of service and similar to many standard international calls. It is substantially less than other Internet telephony products.
Why is the quality better?
First, our product is a dedicated product – its only purpose is to make phone calls over the Internet.
Second, we have a dedicated hardware chip which handles all the voice compression, so the quality is higher than a software solution that needs to share a mulit-purpose chip with other applications.
We also have a quality-enhancing feature that monitors traffic on the Internet and automatically optimizes the quality based on the current Internet traffic.
Is Internet Telephony less secure than regular telephony?
No! Actually, the opposite is true. Spying on a regular telephone line (tapping) is very easy since the sound signal is directly available on the wires, without any encoding or security. Internet telephony uses a sophisticated voice compression algorithm and sends the voice as packets of data. These packets take an unpredictable route across the Internet and are reassembled into sound only when they reach the destination device. Spying on an Internet Telephony conversation requires very sophisticated equipment and advanced technical abilities.
How do Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone improve Internet Telephony security?
Aplio/PRO or Aplio/Phone are digital from one end to the other. This means that your phone conversation is encoded, compressed and packetized all the way from your wall jack to the destination wall jack. Other types of services may not be digital from end to end. For example, Internet Telephony gateway services use regular analog voice signals between their servers and the originating and destination telephones.
